I am very excited to announce that Kristina Olsen will be performing in my living room on Saturday, July 16!

I first heard Kristina in 1999 at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz. I was actually going to see the show's opener, my good friend Stevie Coyle was performing with The Frontmen. But when Kristina took the stage, I was instantly infatuated. What a gutsy, powerful voice! What side-splitting storytelling! What a range of songwriting! Leaving the Auld Music

"Leaving the Auld Music" was recorded at the Chris Caswell Auburn House Concert on November 8, 2008. It was written by Chris for Danny Carnahan using a traditional tune. Chris and Danny performed together for several years in the early 80’s and recorded two phonograph albums together, New Leaves (1981) and Boarderlands (1982).

Changing E-Mail Software

We have changed our email list software in order to give our friends a bit of control over the mail they receive from us. Originally we simply kept a big old list of emails/names of everybody we knew who had expressed interest in attending a house concert.

This week we are setting up a professional email list service to help us handle the success of the Auburn House Concerts. The new software uses a confirmed opt-in policy to ensure, by email, that subscribers intended to join your mailing list. When subscribers join the mailing list through the subscription link on our Web site, we send them an email message that contains a confirmation link. Subscribers must click the link to confirm they want to be added to your mailing list.

This new policy guards against the possibility that a third-party added the subscriber without their knowledge or permission.

Once on the Auburn House Concerts list you will be able to indicate your interest is any of the following areas:

Gerry recorded this beautiful instrumental on his 2008 CD The Bog Bodies And Other Stories: Music For Guitar.

Listen through to the end because the last minute is extraordinarily beautiful. The room was full of overtones and celestial bells that record/playback just can not capture. If you love to "listen" to music, do yourself a favor and plan to spend this Halloween at Gerry's next Auburn House Concert.

New Stevie Coyle CD Released

At his second Auburn House Concert back in January Stevie announced that his first solo CD named 622 will be available in a couple of months. We'll its out with a different title, Ten In One. The marketing blurb follows. Naturally the CD is available at StevieCoyle.com and other find book stores.

Stevie Coyle was a co-founder of the Waybacks, fronting them as a songwriter and vocalist, as well as rhythm and fingerstyle lead guitarist. He recently left the Waybacks and branched out as a solo singer-songwriter.

His debut CD, "Ten-in-One", is being released this month. This is a concept album, ostensibly about a trip to a sideshow and back. The cast includes Mike Marshall (David Grisman Darol Anger, Choro Famoso) on mandolin, Sam Bevan (Grisman, Joe Craven, Matt Flinner) on bass, Philip Aaberg (Windham Hill, Eugene Friesen) on accordion, Hank Roberts (Bill Frisell) on cello, Kit Walker (Kundalini Boombox, Airto Moreira) on keys, Kendrick Freeman (Allison Brown) on drums, Heidi Clare (AtAGallop, Reeltime Travelers) on fiddle, Dr. Robby Virus (Project Pimiento) on theremin, Marla Fibish (Three Mile Stone) on mandolin, Rich DePaolo (Ten Sleep) on electric guitar, mixing and mastering, Mike Phelan (Marley's Ghost), Corinne West, Teresa Tudury, Misty Browning and Rachel Tree on vocals. Walter Strauss produced and plays guitar and sings. I play guitar, lap steel and sing.

In this performance Stevie will be accompanied by Kit Walker on Keyboards, Kendrick Freeman on drums, and Sam Bevan on bass and harmony vocals. Since, in an earlier incarnation, Stevie was also a stand-up comedian (The Regan Brothers with Roy Zimmerman), expect also a lot of funny stuff!

Holdstock & Macleod will be performing at the Auburn House Concerts on Friday July 24th.

If you have thought about coming to the monthly sing, In Harmony's Way, but don't feel comfortable singing in front of people then this is the concert for you. Dick and Allen are founding members of the original In Harmony's Way down in the Bay Area. There will be ample opportunity to join in with the rest of the audience and sing along with the chorus. Melanie O'Reilly Concert Report

Way cool.

Frank and Melanie made music that brought a tear to my eye it was so beautiful. They made music together as jazz is supposed to be: spontaneous, interactive and full of joy.

Our new Zoom H2 digital recorder provided a marked improvement in the sound recording. Look for a couple of videos from the concert on the AHC website in May.

Stevie Coyle, Jan. 17

Stevie Coyle launched Auburn House Concerts on September 7th, 2007. Now that we have built an audience we are having Stevie back so more of our friends will have a chance to experience this dynamite performer.

Stevie is the co-founder of the whiz-bang newgrass string band The Waybacks. He's gone solo now, and he'll be appearing live at Auburn House Concerts on the evening of Saturday, January 17th, 2009 at 8:00PM.

One astute music reviewer described Stevie's act as "like watching Leo Kottke, Jorma Kaukonen and David Lindley play mumbledy-peg with Garrison Keillor, Dan Hicks, John Hartford and Rene Descartes in Dave Barry's back yard."

Whatever it is, it's hot fingerstyle acoustic guitar and a rather oblique lyrical and personal view of life in modern times.

We have been inviting artists into our house to perform for over a year now. Many people have been able to come and share this wonderful musical experience with us. Recently we installed some software, GroupMail, to enable us to manage the email addresses you have given us to keep you informed.

Myra Joy to join Caswell

Joining Chris Caswell tomorrow night will be special guest Myra Joy on violoncello. She and Chris just played a well received concert at the Freight and Salvage Coffeehouse in Berkeley.

Myra also performs regularly with singers including The Black Brothers and Hans York, and has collaborated with Kitka, Melanie O’Reilly (AHC Nov. 2007) and Aisling.

Harps without Borders Workshop

Chris Caswell is going to present his workshop Harps without Borders the afternoon of his concert. This hour and a half workshop will allow you to explore the sounds and vibrations of the harp. No harp experience expected, just a love of listening to music.

Pictured is the prototype of the new Fairy Harp by Caswell Harps. It comes in different princess colors as well as a natural finish. It has the same effective range as a Soprano recorder, and the same stringing and spacing as the top end of the big harps. Chris promises to bring a couple up to Auburn for you to borrow and/or buy at the workshop.

Coming to Auburn House Concerts later in Novermber is internationally renowned artist Gerry O'Beirne.

Born in Ennis, County Clare, along Ireland’s music-rich west coast, Gerry O’Beirne is a renowned singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist (he plays 6 and 12 string guitar, tiple, ukulele and slide guitar; among others).

Gerry grew up in Ireland and in Ghana in West Africa, and has since lived in England, California, and Mexico. Gerry’s own compositions blend the passion found in traditional music with the freshness of contemporary song.

Coming to Auburn House Concerts in Novemeber is harpist Chris Caswell.

Chris Caswell is a Renaissance man of the Celtic Arts. He is a renowned Celtic Harpist, harp maker and musician's musician.

Chris Caswell is a true Celtic bard and a natural raconteur. He casts a bright spell through his intense and creative playing, songs, and obvious delight in what he’s doing. His music is informed by Wales, the Middle East, Latin America, the French countryside—anywhere from which his experience can move the listener in an essential way.

The afternoon of the concert, Chris will lead two of his popular workshops—Harps without Borders, and Pizza-box Bodhrán—both for all levels.

Paddy Keenan and Tommy O'Sullivan Concert

The Paddy Keenan and Tommy O'Sullivan Concert on Friday night was incredible. The concert was sold out so we started a waiting/SRO list. As expected there were unexpected events in people's lives that prevented them from attending, and consequently, all the folks on the waiting list were able to find a seat.

Pete Grant joined Tommy and Paddy for most of the sets. Usually Pete plays the dobro in our sessions so it was a special treat to hear some of his pedal steel guitar music. At Paddy's request, Pete and Phyllis Grant did a song for the crowd. Then Bo Bowen, whistle, from Nine-8ths Irish was asked to join in for a set as well.

Sharon shot several videos that we hope to publish on the concerts website after the artists have reviewed and approved their release. The MP3 recorder did a fine job capturing a great performance so we don't foresee any problems getting a couple up in the next few weeks.

After the concert we had a nice short session. Paddy played his low D whistle and Tommy played the bar man, leaning on the kitchen counter enjoying the music.

Mary and the Solder

Recorded at the Legacy concert on July 11, 2008; Justin Murphy (vocal, guitar) Valerie Plested (fiddle) and Don Penzien (bodhrán).

This was originally a Scottish song named Mary and the Solder. It is about a young woman who sees a bunch of solders parading and likes the look of one of them. She then tries to get him to marry her. He was not very interested until she tells him she has 50 guineas in her pocket. They get married and live happily ever after.

The jig that completes the set is Jimmy Ward's.

This Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) composition for soprano and violin is part of his Song Cycle Along the Field, no. 2. We'll To The Woods No More. The lyric is from a collection of poetry entitled A Shropshire Lad by Alfred Edward Housman (1859-1936). Normally performed as a duet Eden wrote this arrangement for solo voice and violin.

Paddy Keenan and Tommy O'Sullivan, Aug 28

Coming to Auburn House Concerts in August are Paddy Keenan and Tommy O'Sullivan. We expect the show to sell out so make your reservations ASAP.

A founding member of The Bothy Band, Paddy Keenan is generally acknowledged as the most accomplished uilleann piper performing today. Paddy and Tommy O'Sullivan have been touring regularly since 1997. Paddy's solo album Na Keen Affair features Tommy, and their much acclaimed album The Long Grazing Acre was released in 2003. The pair tour and appear at festivals worldwide.

Auburn's own Pete Grant will be joining Paddy and Tommy on dobro and pedal steel guitar.

Legacy Concert

The Auburn House Concert staring Legacy was smokin'. (Remember, that is when we couldn't go outside because of the fires.) Once again the largest attendance to date. Many people had never heard of Legacy before and were delighted they took a chance. We overheard someone say that they knew Legacy from their recordings and were very impressed how great and tight they sounded at the concert.

Melanie O'Reilly Concert

The Melanie O'Reilly Concert on Saturday evening was magical.

Melanie was joined by Sean O'Nuallain (guitar) and Richard Tibbitts (flute, whistle, percussion).

Since Richard lives in the San Diego area they haven't had much time to rehearse. That afternoon they practiced in our living room. Sharon had things to do but I had taken the day off and was able to just sit their and listen, my own private concert. A pleasure to observe good musicians listening and adapting to each other's performance.

We recorded the concert with our MP3 recorder. The audio quality was ok and I will be able to create a private CD of the performance for the musicians using GarageBand (the Mac rocks). I regret that we forgot to preserve Stevie Coyle's concert but we'll make a point of recording all the house concerts from now on.

Melanie and Sean were able to stay overnight and we all enjoyed a very nice leisurely breakfast on Sunday.

One of the most sensational musical pioneers to explode on the Irish scene, Melanie O'Reilly is now firmly established in the pantheon of creative Irish artists. As a performer/singer-songwriter, her exhilarating and unique blend of Irish traditional music and jazz creates a powerful and haunting soundscape, exploring untouched frontiers, and which captivates audiences on both sides of the Atlantic.

Born in Dublin, Melanie comes from a family of musicians and actors, and she spent most of her youth treading the boards as an actress and singer, while at the same time was a multiple award-winning singer in Dublin’s Feis Ceol competitions.

Her passion for jazz began when her sister Clodagh introduced her the sound of jazz singers at the age of 11. Intrigued by the rhythms and scat improvisations of Ella Fitzgerald, she decided then that she would become a jazz singer, and she immersed herself in the music of other jazz giants such as Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie. Stevie Coyle Concert

The Stevie Coyle house concert was that first in what we hope will be a frackin' amazing venue for artists in and around the Celtic traditional music world.

We submitted the concert announcement to the community calendar on KVMR radio. In spite of the fact that the announcement didn't get aired until the morning of the concert, a few people called to make reservations. The KVMR listeners all knew Stevie's music from The Waybacks.

I knew we were experiencing something very special when Stevie sang a Waybacks song that had backup vocals and the audience spontaneously sang backup.

We were so excited about having Stevie play in our house we made a whole bunch of food for the potluck. We ate during the intermission which seemed more like a party then anything else. After a half hour or so we went back into the living room and listened to more great fingerpicked guitar and entertaining songs.

When we moved up to Auburn, to this great house, I started having visions of hosting house concerts, for all my musical buddies. We are starting off with a BANG!

Stevie Coyle, of The Waybacks will be up in our area doing the American River Festival the fourth weekend in September. He has graciously consented to appear at our house for a solo performance on the Friday of that weekend, September 21.

Stevie and I attended Salinas High school together back in the day. We both studied drama, and both appeared in Hotel Paradiso, a French farce. Steve played the bellman, and even then he showed a flair for comedy. He went on to study acting, but music was always a big part of his life. Steve and his brother Jim have been playing guitar since long before I knew them.

Stevie's talent, sense of humor and lightning quick wit have only improved with time. I feel very fortunate to know him and I'm just tickled that the rest of the world is now recognizing this great performer.

I hope you all come out and enjoy this great singer/songwriter. Tell your friends! Steve will have you tapping your feet and clapping your hands. And most likely, he'll have you laughing, too. He's an entertainer extraordinare.
